These words could suspend
my beloved in space,
these words could
keep her here forever.
I can make a liturgy
of the names, as starfire,
lightning, moonburst,
night. I will chant
and chant and her flesh
will whisper its answer.
Appaloosa, tango, sundial,
snow. As if life could be
a bright book of words,
as if we were the ones
appointed to turn its pages.
This is as good a love poem as any I’ve seen including that stuff that’s in the Bible
