Lay Those Burdens Down, Mr. Mann

Tag you’re it, the world says.

Every night I wake up.

Words come, then voice.

chosen   chosen   chosen

Open Deuteronomy anywhere.

They are evil.

They are coming.

This is the most Biblical thing. “They” can be any of the nations surrounding what became Israel and Judea. They all wanted to “get” the Jews. This hasn’t changed. Now, we are the new Jews, Indians, or Mexicans I suppose. Everybody wants to get us. It gets more and more real. So, you’re absolutely right. They ARE evil and they ARE coming, the sumbitches. If not immediately, then someday. We don’t even have an imagined posterity. We will be as sand. Personally, I’m going out in a hail of gunfire. That’s what the Maccabees would have done and, it seems that allot of my neighbors are thinking this way as well. You should come down for a visit sometime.

Thank you, Steve. We are feeling embattled and these poems are acts of resistance. I am glad you are reading them, dear fellow poet.
